Mississippi Ave Neighborhood & Community

Portland’s historic Mississippi Avenue thrives on a rich and diverse history that expresses itself today in an inspired and independent mix of neighbors, businesses, homes and community. Originally home to the Clackamas Indians, the area was settled in the mid 1800s by shipyard workers and their families from Germany and Scandinavia. Later, many African Americans displaced in 1948 by the VanPort flood relocated to the neighborhood, further enhancing the rich tapestry of life and culture. Population and business grew as Northwest Native Americans and light industrial activity returned to the area by way of post WWII relocation and other federal programs.

“One of the most vibrant and walkable streets in Portland!”

Today, Mississippi Ave is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Oregon. Recent revitalization efforts have preserved it distinct history and character while inviting and blending in new energy and ideas to become as others describe it, “one of the most vibrant and walkable streets in Portland.”

Businesses are locally owned and independent, founded built and maintained by people who are fulfilling their dreams, while keeping family, community and giving back at the forefront of their efforts. The results of this can be seen in the limitless efforts to support local schools and efforts to build programs to support the youth in the community. The strong flavor of community support the fostering of sustainability, and the overall family and pet friendliness alone make it a great area. However, combined with the eclectic blend of storefronts, boutiques, music venues, restaurants, coffee shops and breweries, this neighborhood wins hands down as one of the most exciting neighborhoods in the city of Portland.
